Breaking: Ex-President Buhari dies in London

Nigeria is in mourning following the announcement of the death of the country’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari.

According to a statement signed by his longtime spokesperson, Garba Shehu, the former president passed away this afternoon at a clinic in London.

The statement, issued on behalf of the family, did not disclose the cause of death.

The message read:“INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHIRRAJIUUN. The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, was known for his anti-corruption stance and efforts to reposition Nigeria’s economy and security architecture.

Tributes are expected to pour in from across the country and the international community in the coming hours as Nigerians reflect on the life and legacy of the former leader.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
