The Cross River State government has launched renewed efforts to enhance the aesthetics of Calabar, the state capital, as preparations for the 2024 Carnival Calabar gain momentum.
A major part of this initiative is the reintroduction of state-branded hanging waste bins, strategically installed to promote proper waste disposal among residents.
Governor Bassey Otu, represented by his Special Adviser on Urban Beautification and Development, Essien Eyo, unveiled the project during installation of the bins along the 12-kilometer carnival route.
He emphasized his government’s vision of a cleaner and more beautiful Calabar.
The reintroduction of hanging waste bins is part of a larger urban renewal project that includes road repairs and infrastructure upgrades.

Governor Otu also disclosed plans to establish a taskforce dedicated to enforcing sanitation laws and prosecuting environmental offenders.
The Director of the Calabar Urban Development Authority, CUDA, Francis Cobham, also highlighted the role of citizens in maintaining a cleaner city and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting the government’s goals.
As the state gears up for Carnival Calabar, these initiatives not only prepare the city for the festivities but also reflect the government’s commitment to urban development and environmental sustainability.
