Declaration Of Emergency : PH Based Lawyers Express Divergent Views On Action

Some port Harcourt-based Lawyers have expressed worries over the recent turn of events in Rivers State, particularly the declaration of a state of emergency by President Bola Tinubu during a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday evening.

While some described the act as negative precedent that poses a huge threat to the Nation’s Democracy others say the move was necessary inorder to restore sanity

The state of emergency declared in Rivers State by president Bola Tinubu following the tension in the state after the explosion that rocked two oil facilities in different parts of the state as well as the protracted political tussle between the legislative and the executive arms of government even after the supreme Court Judgement that was expected to lay all outstanding matters to rest.In the view of these legal practitioners, the happenings in the state in the past few weeks do not warrant such severe sanctions on the Governor and other political office holders affected by the decision.

For this lawyer Osi Olisa the constant reference to the state of emergency declared in Borno,Adamawa and Yobe by former president Goodluck Jonathan cannot form the basis for faulting president Tinubu’s action due to the number of issues that were at stake in Rivers State prior to the declaration.

With the swearing in of Retired Rea Adminiral Ibok Ete Ibas as the sole administrator of Rivers State, residents look forward to the immediate reversal of the supreme Court Judgement that stopped the state allocation.
