Djibouti’s foreign minister elected chairman of African Union

African leaders have elected Djibouti’s Foreign Minister, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, to chair the African Union commission.
Djibouti’s finance minister, Ilyas Dawaleh, revealed this on Saturday.
Youssouf won the required support of two-thirds of the region’s leaders in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa to secure the post, representing some 1.5 billion Africans across the continent.
The multilingual politician who speaks Arabic, English and French remains close to Djibouti’s leader Ismail Omar Guelleh.
Guelleh, in a post on X, called his minister’s election a proud moment for Djibouti and Africa.
Youssouf has been foreign minister since 2005, was previously Djibouti’s ambassador to Egypt and has served as foreign minister in the governments of three presidents.
