Enugu tanker tragedy: Nnaji advocates nationwide campaigns, removal of road blocks

The Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji has described last Saturday’s fuel tanker tragedy in Enugu State as devastating.
DAILY POST recalls that the accident, caused by a fuel-ladden tanker, wiped out a family of 11 and several others.
In a statement he issued on Wednesday, the Minister, who extended condolences to the families of the victims, said there was the need to remove roadblocks on hilly or sloping roads.
He also advocated for a national campaign on the dangers of scooping fuel from trucks.
According to him, “this devastating incident resulted in significant loss of life and underscores the urgent need for comprehensive measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones in this tragic event. We also extend our wishes for a swift recovery to those injured.”
The Minister emphasized the importance of implementing effective strategies to prevent future incidents.
Among the measures he enumerated included: “routine checks of fuel tankers to ensure they meet safety standards, thereby reducing the risk of mechanical failures such as brake malfunctions.
“Launch nationwide campaigns to educate the public on the hazards associated with collecting fuel from accident scenes, highlighting the risks of explosions and health implications.
“Removal of roadblocks on hilly or sloping roads, as these, often pose significant safety hazards, especially for big vehicles navigating steep inclines or sharp descents.
“Encourage the use of inert gas systems in fuel tankers to prevent explosions by reducing the presence of flammable vapors.
“Promote the development and utilization of fuel containers equipped with passive protection modules designed to resist explosions.”
Nnaji reaffirmed his Ministry’s commitment to collaborating with relevant agencies and stakeholders to enhance safety measures in fuel transportation.
