Equity demands tertiary institution for southern Adamawa – Sen Binos

The southern senatorial zone of Adamawa State, the only one without a single major tertiary institution in the state, should have one at last, the senator representing the zone has said.
Senator Binos Yaroe made the assertion on Thursday in Yola, giving the hint that a bill he sponsored to establish a university of education in Numan would soon be passed and very likely signed into law.
DAILY POST reports that central Adamawa has a federal university, a federal college of education, a state polytechnic, a zonal campus of the Nigerian Law School, and a private university in Yola North, Yola South and Girei; while northern zone has a state university, a federal University of Agriculture (new), a federal polytechnic, and a state college of education in Mubi and Hong, leacing the southern zone, with the largest number of LGAs (nine, against central Adamawa’s seven and northern Adamawa’s five) has only a campus of the Adamawa State Polytechnic in Numan and a College of Agriculture in Ganye to its name.
In a media interaction with newsmen in Yola Town, Yola South Local Government Area, Senator Binos recalled that the University of Education Numan Bill, was earlier in the year passed by the National Assembly but rejected by President Bola Tinubu who queried certain provisions of the bill.
He reiterated, however, that the corrective efforts being made by the National Assembly will ensure smooth passage and signing of the bill.
Giving the update on the progress of the bill, the senator said, “We first worked on the University of Education Numan bill during the time of President Muhammadu Buhari but it didn’t get through. I represented it on my second coming to the Senate.”
He said the bill was passed by the Senate and House of Representatives but that Tinubu early in February this year withdrew his signature when the bill got to him, citing issues especially on land allocation for the proposed university, neccesitating a reworking on the bill by both houses of the National Assembly.
“Now, the Senate has corrected the contentious provisions,” he disclosed, adding that the House of Representatives will most certainly do its part when the National Assembly reopens and the bill will most hopefully be assented to by the president.
Addressing a spreading speculation that he will be contesting for governor of Adamawa State come 2027, Binos who is in his second term as Adamawa South representative to the Senate, said he prefers to return to the Senate if his people will grant that wish.
“There is a lot to gain from being a ranking senator in terms of what you can do for your people,” he said, adding that his wish to gain lots of experience as a senator rather than seeking to govern Adamawa State.
