Group Advocates Setting-up LG Elections Unit In INEC

A pro-democracy group, LOGINnaija has advocated for Local Governments’ political autonomy by empowering the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct Local Government Council elections in Nigeria through a dedicated unit called the National Local Government Elections Unit.

Speaking at the launching of the pilot report in Abuja on 4-key proposals to strengthen local governance in Nigeria, the speakers said the proposal if implemented holistically will establish a uniform election cycle nationwide and eliminating discrepancies in Local Government Council chairmanship tenures.

The group also urged the Ministry of Finance and Office of the Accountant General of the Federation to expand the current FAAC Committee to include Local Government Areas representation begining from August 2025.

The proposed recommendations are aimed to strengthen local government autonomy, aligning with the Supreme Court’s financial autonomy pronouncements and promoting effective governance.
