IHF Emerging Nations Championship: Hosts Bulgaria defeat Nigeria in semi final

Nigeria‘s fairy tale in the 2025 emerging nations championship has ended following a 30-23 defeat to hosts Bulgaria in the first semi final.

Despite being one of the three undefeated teams coming into the match, Nigeria struggled against Bulgaria’s relentless defense.

Goalkeeper Nikolay Petrov’s incredible performance, with six saves in the first half, kept Bulgaria ahead as they built an eight-goal lead.

Nigeria’s star, Faruk Yusuf was stifled, scoring just two goals from five shots and their attack faltered with a low shooting efficiency.

Bulgaria’s Svetlin Dimitrov and Kristian Vasilev led the charge, continuing to extend the lead in the second half.

Nigeria’s hope of a comeback was dashed as Bulgaria maintained control and secured a 30:23 victory.

Despite the loss, Nigeria’s performance marks their best finish at the championship and a chance to fight for the bronze medal.
