“My family has done enough” – Made Kuti says he’s not willing to risk loved ones for activism

 Afrobeat artiste, Made Kuti, has sparked online conversations following his honest take on activism and governance in Nigeria. Speaking during a recent appearance on the Breakdown podcast, the grandson of Fela Kuti explained why he has become increasingly sceptical about fighting for change in Nigeria despite coming from a lineage of renowned activists. According to Made, the activism and sacrifices of his legendary family members Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, Fela Kuti, Femi Kuti, and Seun Kuti have not produced the change they hoped for. They threw my great-grandmother from a storey building. She was killed for being righteous. My dad has fought, Seun is still speaking out, my family has risked so much And yet, here we are, he said. He explained that while he believes in being on the right side of history, hes unwilling to continue the struggle at the cost of the wellbeing of his family. Selflessness, Im very careful with that. Giving and getting nothing in return. Im of the opinion that we [the Kuti family] have done enough already, he said firmly. While Made made it clear hes not interested in full-blown activism, he said he still intends to play his part but within reason. I want to be able to look my children in the eye and say, I did my best. But I wont die or lose my family for a country that hasnt shown it can change through individual sacrifice.
