Rivers United football club continued their impressive runs in the Nigeria Premier Football League NPFL on Thursday after defeating Shooting Stars 2-0 in Port-Harcourt while league leaders Remo Stars fell to Plateau United by 3-1 in Jos.
Rivers United led by former Super Eagles coach Finidi George now have 17 points from seven matches, while Remo Stars dropped in the standings with 15 points.
Rivers United had to wait till the second half before they broke the stalemate through Aniekeme Okon in the 51st minute.
Ndifreke Effiong then came off the bench to make the game safe for the home side in the 65th minute.
Shooting Stars were reduced to 10 men when Alex Aghahowa was sent off soon after the opening goal.
Bayelsa United are now in danger of being relegated after they were thrashed 3-0 in Benin by a resurgent Bendel Insurance team.
Katsina United pipped visiting Akwa United 1-0, while relegation battlers Heartland FC and Ikorodu City drew 1-1 in Owerri.
Ikorodu played the last 10 minutes a man short after Toyeeb Aiyigbe received a second booking.
