Peter Obi’s strong ally, Obaze dumps Labour Party

An ally of Mr. Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Oseloka H. Obaze, has announced his resignation from the party. Obaze, a former diplomat and Secretary to the Anambra State Government under Obi, had been closely associated with the Labour Party as an adviser and key figure. In a letter addressed to journalists in Anambra on Sunday, May 4, Obaze confirmed that he had informed the LP Chairman in Ochuche Ward 406, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State of his decision shortly after the partys primary election on April 5. His resignation took effect on April 6. Obaze explained that his departure was a protest against the conduct of the April 5 governorship primary election in Anambra, which he described as fraught with outright irregularities, bothering on fraud and criminality. He criticized the process for not aligning with the partys constitution, core values, or democratic principles. The processes, conduct, and outcome of the Labour Party governorship primaries held on April 5, 2025, in Awka were not in tandem with either the partys constitution and espoused core values or true tenets of democracy. As such, I hereby disassociate myself henceforth from the Labour Party, he stated. Obaze also cited the leadership crisis at the national level of the Labour Party, referring to the ongoing conflict between the Abure and Nenadi Usman factions, as another key reason for his decision. Confirming the authenticity of his resignation letter, Obaze added, The letter is real and speaks for itself. In 2022, Obaze had resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) a week before Peter Obi, before becoming his presidential placeholder in the Labour Party.
