Senator calls for peace as Abia, Akwa Ibom boundary clash claims one life

The senator representing Abia Central, Senator Austin Akobundu, has urged the people of Ariam Eleuelu in Ariam Usaka of Ikwuano LGA of Abia State and Obot Akara community in Akwa Ibom State, who are currently embroiled in a border dispute, to sheathe their swords and allow peace to reign.
Akobundu made the appeal Sunday night after the latest episode of the protracted crisis claimed another life and led to the destruction of properties worth millions of naira.
He promised to take up the matter with the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, who incidentally represents Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial district that also covers Obot Akara LGA.
Akobundu assured his constituents that he would table the matter at the Senate for urgent action, assuring that the upper legislative body would do all within its powers to restore lasting peace in the affected areas.
He urged all parties involved in the crisis to see one another as one people and live in peace in the spirit of brotherhood and good neighbourliness.
The senator equally promised to work with all relevant government agencies at all levels in the pursuit of peace and restoration of normalcy in the affected communities.
Akobundu, who hails from Ikwuano LGA, praised the Mayor of the council, Anthony Nzeribe Nwaubani, for the quick mobilisation of security agencies who in turn responded swiftly to the latest conflict.
The senator who prayed for the repose of the soul of the dead victim of the clash, pledged his solidarity with the bereaved family even as he called upon the Abia and Akwa Ibom governments to do everything to achieve lasting peace.
Confirming the boundary clash to DAILY POST on Monday, Abia State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said, “Yea, we are aware. There was a clash but we swung into action. The place is calm and we have ensured normalcy.”
Also, the media officer to Akobundu, Jude Ndukwe, confirmed the sevelopment but said the senator will liaise with Akpabio to achieve lasting peace.
