Taraba State Committee hands over rustled cows to owners

The Taraba State Cattle and Livestock Recovery Committee has recovered at least two hundred and twenty-two rustled cows from parts of the state, as well as from Plateau and Nasarawa States.

The recovery was made in partnership with security agencies in the state.

Some of the cows were handed over to their owners, following presentation of proof of ownership.

The Taraba State Cattle and Other Livestock Recovery Committee was set up by the Taraba State Government as part of steps to promote security, and ensure transparency in the return of stolen cattle and other livestock that were recovered, through a joint operation, by security agencies in the Ardo-Kola Local Government Area of the state.

The committee, which is chaired by the chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, (ALGON), who is also the Chairman of the Jalingo Local Government Council, Aminu Hassan, said they have successfully identified the owners of 198, out of the 222 rustled cows, and handed them over.

Hassan added that the committee underwent a thorough process, to see that those who claimed the cattle had proved ownership beyond doubt, before the handing over in Jalingo, the state capital.

He called on those who have cases of stolen cows or livestock, and can prove that their missing animals are in the recovered herd, to also come forward for identification.

Speaking on the efforts of the Taraba State Government to recover the stolen animals, the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders in Taraba State, Ya’u Ibrahim, said it was a timely intervention, to prevent undue suspicion, and promote peaceful coexistence.

At the time of filing this report, 24 cows, and 59 sheep recovered by the Taraba State Cattle and Livestock Recovery Committee, were yet to be claimed.
