Teachers’ Strike: FCT Authorities Adamant As Industrial Action Enters Week 2

The strike embarked upon by teachers in public schools in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, over non payment of salary arrears and minimum wage increments has entered week 2 with no end in sight, leaving students stranded.

It’s week two of the strike by teachers in public schools in the FCT.

Most public primary schools started their first term examinations on December 2nd, 2024. The exams were halted a few days into the exercise because the teachers embarked on an indefinite strike over non payment of outstanding salaries and minimum wage increments by the Federal Capital Territory Administration, leaving students stranded.

Since then, some critical stakeholders like the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike has been making efforts to meet the demands of the striking teachers.

Also, the senator representing FCT at the upper chamber, Ireti Kingibe in a recent statement made available to journalists, described the non payment of teachers entitlements as a glaring indictment of a system that continues to undermine the dignity of educators, a development that, she says compromises the future of the Nigerian child.

One big question the students are asking is how long will the strike last?

For now it is matter for conjecture as only time and government will tell the children when to return to their classrooms.
