Troops neutralize over 70 terrorists, key commanders, in northeast operation

Troops from Operation HADIN KAI have achieved significant success in their ongoing clearance operations against terrorist strongholds in the Timbuktu Triangle, located in the North East of the country.
According to a statement issued by Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, the multi-pronged operation, which began on January 16, 2025, has led to the neutralization of over 70 terrorist combatants, including three high-ranking commanders.
“The operation was specifically aimed at dismantling the terrorist presence in the Timbuktu Triangle,” Major General Buba stated. “Among those neutralized were key figures such as Talha, the Terrorist Special Forces Commander; Mallam Umar, the Terrorist Operations Commander; and Abu Yazeed, the Terrorist Brigade Commander.”
During the operation, troops encountered multiple attempts by the terrorists to counter the offensive. According to the military, the terrorists employed improvised explosive devices (IEDs), including person-borne and vehicle-borne suicide bombers, in an attempt to halt the troops’ advance. However, the soldiers successfully thwarted these attacks.
“Our troops were well-prepared for the terrorists’ tactics,” Buba explained. “They managed to neutralize the threats, including shooting down amateur drones deployed by the terrorists.”
While the operation has seen significant gains, it has not come without losses. The military reported that 22 soldiers were killed in action, with several others wounded. In a note of caution to the media, Major General Buba urged restraint in publishing the names of fallen troops to allow for formal notification of their families.
“The sacrifices made by our brave soldiers will never be forgotten,” Buba said. “We appeal to the public to respect the privacy of the families of those who have paid the ultimate price in service to the nation.”
