The Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Nigeria, Cristian Munduate, has called on Sub-national governments to show greater commitment to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Services for the overall well-being of the citizens.
Munduate who made the call in Abuja on Thursday at the launch of Phase 3 of the Accelerating Sanitation and Water for All Programme (ASWA 3), said the project this time will provide Climate Resilience WASH Services to over 300,000 people in the affected States.
Nigeria participated in the Phase 2 of the Accelerating Sanitation and Water for All (ASWA 2) programme from 2019 to 2023.
The project implemented in 6 Local Government Areas in the 3 States of Adamawa, Yobe and Borno provided access to safe drinking water to about 900,000 people, basic sanitation services to over 700,000 as well as hand washing with soap and water to about 450,000 people.

UNICEF noted that the launch of the Phase 3 of Accelerating Sanitation and Water for All programme (ASWA 3) follows successes recorded in the previous Phases which resulted to increase in access to potable water, especially in rural communities of affected States.
The ASWA 3 project will provide Climate resilience WASH services to at least 360,000 people living in 4 Local Government Areas with support from the government of the Kingdom of Netherlands.
Aligning with the 2023 Climate Landscape Analysis for Children in Nigeria, ASWA 3 will facilitate Youth and Adolescents engagement in raising Community awareness on Climate mitigation and adaptation measures.
The Accelerating Sanitation and Water for All (ASWA 3) Programme will target two States of Adamawa and Kaduna, with their governments expected to commit 50% of all investments required for a successful implementation.
