Why Ghanaians eat lots of eggs – Amaarae

American-Ghanaian singer, Amaarae has explained why Ghanaians eats a lot of eggs.
Ghanaians are known for including eggs in most of their meals, which has a become a subject of social media banter.
Speaking in a recent interview with Madame Joyce, Amaarae explained that there was a historical reason for Ghanaians’ love for eggs.
The ‘Sad Girls Love Money’ hitmaker explained that there was a tradition in Ghanaian homes to give the most meat to the father, which left children with few meats. She explained that to make up for that, eggs were added to children’s food as alternative proteins.
“There is a whole history to that [Ghanaian eating a lot of eggs]. So, the whole thing with eggs was like, back in the days, your father would get the most meat in the food.
“If your mum cooks stew or something else, all the meat would go to your dad. So, the kids get a small meat plus eggs to make up for their protein. That’s why egg has become like a stable in our country because it’s like a cheap add-on to get protein if meat is too expensive.
“Back then, chicken used to be a Christmas luxury. Now, it’s like normal. That’s how the egg thing is a thing because it’s a cheap supplement for protein. That’s why we eat a lot of eggs.”
