Women farmers are calling on Nigerian government to Scale Up Public Investment in Agriculture, and ensure timely consideration, passage, budget releases and utilization as a strategic approach to increase food production, reduce hunger and poverty in the country.
The women who are under the auspices of Small-Scale Women Farmers Organisation of Nigeria (SWOFON) made the call at a farmers stakeholders meeting in Abuja.
According to them, for Nigeria to achieve the goal of food security, policy makers must ensure constituency projects are agricultural and evidence-based so that would boost economy of the rural communities. They also urged that government should implement the 10% national budget allocation to Agriculture as agreed in Maputo/Malabo Declaration which required support for the growth of the sector.
