As the global community marks the 2025 Workers Day, the National Human Rights Commission has extended solidarity to all Nigerian workers for their relentless commitment and contributions towards National Development amidst daunting economic challenges.
In his remarks to commemorate the Day, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu SAN lamented the unprecedented hardships faced by workers due to high inflation rate which has significantly eroded workers’ purchasing power, making it increasingly difficult for them to afford basic necessities of life
In a bid to enhance productivity, Ojukwu tasked government to address the harsh economic realities faced by workers such as high cost of living, non functional transportation system, poor working conditions, poverty, unaffordable healthcare among others
While commending the Federal Government for its initiatives, Ojukwu called for economic reforms and policies that would prioritize human dignity, social justice and well-being of citizens.
The Human Rights Boss Urged Government to engage more in constructive dialogue, as promised during the end bad governance protests, as this will help fosters open communication with labour unions and workers’ representatives to collaboratively address their concerns. He also urged labour unions to adopt more proactive measures in advocating workers’ rights
Ojukwu further emphasised the need to ensure that law enforcement agencies respect and uphold citizens’ rights to freedom of expression, peaceful protests and association
He reiterated the Commission’s commitment to protect the rights of Nigerian workers.
